Mugaya Factory, located in Kenya’s Kirinyaga region, is owned and operated by the Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society and serves around 1,900 smallholder farmers. These farmers cultivate coffee on small plots, typically less than one hectare, at elevations ranging from 1,700 to 1,900 meters above sea level. The varieties grown include SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Blue Mountain, each contributing unique qualities to the cup. SL28 and SL34, developed by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the mid-20th century, are favored for their deep root systems and resilience in dry conditions. Ruiru 11, a more recent variety, is appreciated for its disease resistance, high yields, and ability to produce fruit within just two years. Farming practices at Mugaya emphasize sustainability and Good Agricultural Practices to minimize environmental impact and preserve soil health. These careful methods, combined with the region’s high-altitude climate, help produce coffees of exceptional quality and complexity. Mugaya Factory remains a key player in maintaining Kirinyaga’s strong reputation in the specialty coffee world.
